Social Media is on the top of many business executives’ minds. They try to figure out ways in which firms can gain by the use of Social Media. However even with the added interest, there is limited understanding of what Social Media exactly is and means. The article gives a better understanding and clarification to the meaning. It starts by going through the concept of Social Media, and discusses how it differs from related concepts such as Web 2.0 and User Generated Content. Social Media is then classified in categories, which is grouped under the generalized term into more specific categories by characteristic, for example blogs, social networking sites, virtual game and social worlds.
